Things to know before going on a yoga retreat in Bali
Bali is the perfect place for those willing to experience exoticism while practicing yoga. There are some things, however, that first-time visitors should know before booking a yoga retreat in Bali. So, here are a few things to consider before you go.
When is the best season to go on a yoga retreat in Bali?
The weather in Bali is pretty good year-round with average temperatures in the mid-70s°F. But, like everywhere else, some seasons are better than others. Do you want to be with a lot of tourists? Do you mind the rain? These are things you should consider before booking your yoga retreat in Bali.
Honestly, Bali is a very popular destination and it’s always busy. During summer months (June to August), Bali’s weather is the driest but it’s also when the island becomes really crowded.
The best time to visit Bali is between April and June, or in September, just before and after high season. However, Bali is still a great place to visit during the rainy season (October to April), because this tropical paradise is still sunny for a good part of the day at this time of the year.
Before booking your yoga retreat in Bali, ask yourself the following questions:
- Do you want to avoid the crowds? High season is between June and August.
- Are you worried about getting too much rain? Then, travel between May and September.
- Excess heat is not for you? July is the coolest month of the year with an average of 77°F (25°C).
Do I need a visa to go on a yoga retreat in Bali?
You do need a visa to go on a yoga retreat in Bali, but you do not necessarily need to get the visa before you enter Indonesia. If you plan on staying less than 30 days, you can get a visa on arrival (VOA) at Bali’s airport. This tourist visa is free, and not extendable. You’ll also need a return ticket to prove that you don’t intend on staying.
However, if you plan on staying longer than 30 days, we recommend getting the second type of Visa on Arrival – the extendable tourist visa. This visa costs $35, plus agency fees, and allows you to stay in Indonesia for up to 60 days. You can get this visa at the Denpasar airport in Bali. There is a separate payment counter queue at the airport for this visa.
Religion and culture in Bali
Indonesia is 87% Muslim, but Bali is a multi-religious place. That’s the reason why you will see so many Hindu temples around the island.
Most yoga retreats include temple visits, and Balinese culture activities in their program, such as cooking classes, and trips to holy waterfalls. Going on a yoga retreat in Bali is actually a great way to discover the many religions and the incredible culture of the Island of the Gods.
Safety and Travel Insurance
Bali is a pretty safe place, and when we were there, we never felt in danger. Balinese people are really courteous and respectful. So, to stay safe in Bali, just use some common sense, and be aware of your surroundings at all times, like you would in your home country.
There’s one thing you should know, though. Bali is highly populated and crowded. There is bad traffic and air pollution in many cities. But, lucky for you, most yoga retreats are in the rice paddies, or at the beach. However, if you are going to cities, we recommend you carry a hand sanitizer with you and wash your hands very often.
Also, remember that tap water is not drinkable in Bali. Always drink from bottles or cans. As for Ice cubes, they are made from bottled water so they’re safe to drink.
Before going to Bali, consider buying travel insurance. It’s essential, even if you’re just going on a yoga retreat. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Both Robin and I got conjunctivitis while in Ubud, and had to go to the medical center and the pharmacy. Thankfully, we had travel insurance so we’re able to be treated right away. We always use World Nomads, because they are backed up by reputable insurers and offer very good rates.

We know it’s a no brainer, but your passport is the most important item to remember for an international trip. Always pack it first with your airplane tickets, and cards.
